SOUTHERN SOUTH HAMS

Tree 08. Descendants of William MITCHELMORE
(Stokenham 1748)

This tree is one of several trees with their roots in Stokenham. DNA evidence suggests a relationship to Tree 01, Tree 05, Tree 08 or Tree 09. A discussion of the possible relationships between the various Stokenham trees is available here.

The progenitor, William, moved to Chivelstone soon after his marriage, but all his sons moved much further afield. Elkanah emigrated to Tasmania in 1833, the first known M*CH*MORE immigrant to Australia. By 1841, Josiah, George Humberstone and Jabez were all living in London, Jabez moving to New York in 1848. The first two decades of the 20th century saw further emigration: by 1920, Caroline junior was living in New Zealand, William John Kellen was in Kent and Walter Henry Hill was in Bristol. In 1969, Robert Wilfred, the founder of the M*CH*MORE One Name Study, emigrated to South Australia.

This is the only tree where the spelling MUCHAMORE, common in the 18th century, has survived to the present day. It can be traced back to the children of William Kelland.

George was not living with his second wife in 1861 or 1871, although she was definitely alive. Possibly he separated from her before 1861.

In relation to average earnings, Eliza's estate would have been equivalent to about £9,000 today.

A blotch on the 1861 census record obscures the first 3-5 letters of this daughter's name.

The evidence points to a close friendship between this family and that of Thomas STOCKMAN [Tree 900]: Thomas named one of his daughters Maria Mitchelmore STOCKMAN ; the Mary STOCKMAN who was living with Jabez in 1860 was another daughter; the Percival STOCKMAN who was their naturalisation witness was Thomas's son; and Jabez's wife Maria was the sister of Thomas's wife Sarah LANGDON.
