SOUTHERN SOUTH HAMS

Tree 09. Descendants of Edmond MUCHAMORE
(Charleton, 161x)

The earliest baptism recorded in Charleton was 1642, so this line must have migrated from another parish before then. Y-DNA results suggest that this tree has a common origin with the Stokenham Trees 01, 05 and 08. It is possible they all came from East Allington.

Members of this tree moved to Sherford in the 18th century and then to Slapton and Plymouth. Most members of this tree have remained in South Devon, but John emigrated to the USA in 1816, Mary emigrated to Australia with her husband in 1858, and Charles Henry emigrated to the USA in 1872. Less adventurous were William Richard Edwards, who moved to Somerset in the 1880s and eventually became mayor of Yeovil, James Henry, who moved to Bristol in the 1890s, and William Richard, who moved to Portsmouth in the 1920s.

Underlining indicates the latest update (#30).

The 1802 removal order implies that Andrew had acquired settlement in Brixham by that time but had returned to Sherford and been unable to support himself. He may well have been the "local baker” who in 1815 attempted to sell bread to sailors aboard The Bellerophon, which was holding Napolean prior to his exile to St Helena. UK life events

The birth date on William's baptism record does not agree with his registered date of birth. Perhaps his adoptive father did not know William's actual birth date and made a guess.

In 1851, William was living in the same house as his brother Henry and his children.

It may have been William's father William who subscribed to the Cardiff history book in 1854.

In relation to average earnings, William's estate would have been equivalent to about £5,250,000 today.

It is not known whether Jane was any relation of the Charlotte STOATE who married her husband's brother Henry. They were not sisters.

Elizabeth appears to have been enumerated twice in 1871.

It is not known why Elizabeth and Robert went through two marriage ceremonies. Perhaps there was one ceremony for each set of parents?

In the marriage certificate, William signed his name MITCHELMORE.

It would appear that either William deserted his wife in the 1880s or Ann believed that he was lost at sea . After the customary seven years, she declared herself a widow and remarried. When William died and his remains were returned to Dartmouth for burial, Ann may have realised her second marriage was bigamous and re-married her second husband in order to legalise it.

St Vincent's Boys Home was part of Bishop O'Reilly's Memorial Poor Law School, which his sister Mary was also attending in 1901. A description of life at the boy's school is available here.

It is not known who Margaret MITCHELMORE was; it is possible William did not know anything about his origins and simply invented a name.

Marion's death registration gives her date of birth as 11Jun1919. This appears to have been an error.

"My late father went to university in Oregon at the same time as a Laurence MICHELMORE [Tree 18] went to a California university. When Laurence was sent down briefly for some student newspaper prank, my grandmother got letters of sympathy from friends who had read about it, and thought it was her Lawrence. Years, many years later, I met Laurence in Beirut, where he was head of UNWRA, the relief organisation for Palestinian refugees. As a correspondent in that area, my surname was suddenly a great advantage." personal communication
