SOUTHERN SOUTH HAMS

Tree 13. Descendants of Thomas MICHAELMORE
(Blackawton 170x)

The earliest members of this tree lived in or near Blackawton. Many earlier M*CH*MORE records exist at Blackawton (see Tree 102), and it is possible that this tree is a continuation of that line. Alternatively, the previous M*CH*MORE line may have died out or moved away from Blackawton, and Thomas may have moved into the parish soon afterwards to start a new line.

The first person to leave Devon, John Bennett, moved to Liverpool in the 1840s and adopted the surname MUCHMORE. Charles moved to London at about the same time; his descendants have the surname MITCHELMORE. Peter 0434 moved to South Wales in the early 1890s.

Two members of this tree emigrated to Australia in the early 1850s. Robert emigrated to Queensland but he does not appear to have had any children. On the other hand Daniel Laverance, who emigrated to Victoria, founded a dynasty. His descendants, some of whom moved to Western Australia in the 1890s, are the only known MOUCHEMOREs in the world. The only other known emigrant was Robert, who moved to New York in 1905.

Underlining indicates the latest update (#30).

Peter was baptised in his mother's surname and then given his father's surname when his parents married in 1763.

Dartmouth clerks of the day seem to have had great difficulty transcribing the family surname: The spellings MOUCHEMORE, MAUCHEMORE, MAUCHIMER and MAUCHMOR are all unique to this town.

Background on the Dartmouth-Newfoundland fishing trade is available here.
